Divinity was undoubtedly the most memorable reveal of The Game Awards 2025. Not only because it’s the next game by Baldur’s Gate 3 developer, Larian, but also because the trailer was pretty gruesome. Watching someone’s skin melting off while they scream isn’t something that leaves the mind easily, nor is a demonic statue made out of flesh and bone.

While Baldur’s Gate 3 definitely had some really dark segments, the Divinity series is much darker, as the trailer suggests. In fact, fans think that those who’ve only played Larian’s most recent RPG aren’t prepared for how dark things will get when Divinity finally launches.

Divinity Has Much Darker Themes Than Baldur s Gate 3

Over on Reddit, veteran Larian fans who’ve played the Divinity: Original Sin 2 and the studio’s older games have been discussing how fledgling fans who’ve only played BG3 are not prepared for how dark it could get. Ancient_Influence389’s post succinctly captures the sentiment, and I have to admit that they might be right.

In fact, some diehard fans think even Original Sin 2 was a bit more tame as compared to previous titles. “I remember people calling DOS2 “too lighthearted” years ago and still do and I always wonder. Did we play the same game? Because I found the game to be really f**king dark at times,” said one of the comments.

Other comments noted some of the brutal aspects of Larian’s previous games, like a guy surrounded by the ghosts of children, a Deathfog that wipes out an entire town, a squirrel riding an undead cat, and the spirits of the dead getting devoured by the gods.

Baldur’s Gate 3’s trailer was pretty gruesome too, showing a soldier turning into an Illithid. However, the burnt flesh and agonizing screams in the Divinity trailer actually made me want to look away at times. If that’s how dark the rest of the game will be, I think I’ll have to prepare myself as well.

They’ve already made at least 2 divinity games, right? Can’t people just play those to see for themselves (or likely already have)? Or, are y’all talking about people who have only ever played BG3? That would be at best a handful of people who only just became old enough to buy mature games when they discovered BG3.
