Avengers: Doomsaday Trailer Shows The Expected Return Of An OG Avenger

Josh has been playing video games for longer than he can remember, kicking things off with a Master System before upgrading to a Mega Drive. Covering the industry since 2018, if a game has a strong story – or even better, the decisions you make determine the course of that story – odds are he’s going to like it. Or, you know, put Sonic or Pikachu on the cover and that’ll get his attention too.
We knew it was coming. We’ve seen the leaks, or at least heard about them. But now it’s official. The very first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, which will be released in theaters at the end of 2026, has been released, and while we’ve not been shown much, we have been given our first look at a returning Captain America.
In fact, that’s pretty much all we’ve been shown. Considering the movie’s star-studded cast and the action we’ll be treated to during Marvel’s upcoming blockbuster, the first trailer is surprisingly scaled back. Just Chris Evans back in the MCU as Steve Rogers. Not even in his Cap’ attire, although we do see it. Just regular old Rogers, the most intriguing part being that this version of the character appears to have had a child.
Avengers: Doomsday s First Trailer Has Dropped
The trailer shows Rogers walking into a house, a slow, solemn rendition of the MCU’s Avengers theme playing as he does so. He either removes or puts away his Captain America suit, confirming this isn’t some alternate version of the character who never becomes Cap’, and is then shown holding a very young baby, presumably his own son or daughter.
Now let the rampant speculation begin, I say, as if it wasn’t already following rumors that Evans would be a part of the Doomsday cast, and then semi-confirmation via a leaked trailer. With so little shown in this first trailer, there’s a lot to speculate on, too. Who is that baby? Is this the same Steve Rogers from the first few phases of the MCU? And are he and his baby living in the same universe we’re most familiar with?
Where Did We Last See Chris Evans As Captain America?
In case you had forgotten, Evans’ Captain America was left behind in Avengers: Endgame six years ago. Rogers took it upon himself to return the Infinity Stones he and the other surviving Avengers used to save the half of the universe that had been snapped out of existence by Thanos. Rogers then went to live in the past with his sweetheart, Peggy, which meant, by the time we saw him again in the present, he was an old man.
This returning character is clearly not the same one we left behind. He’s young again, which could mean one of many things. Marvel and Disney may have done some, let’s call it creative, storytelling to give them an excuse to bring back the original Steve Rogers. There’s an equal, if not slightly more likely, possibility that the Rogers we’re seeing here calls a different branch of the multiverse home.
The third option is that this is a flashback, and we’re being shown what Cap’s life was like between choosing a new point on the timeline to call home and seeing him again, aged up at the end of Endgame. That final option is my favorite of the three, and that we’re being shown the flashback to help introduce his son, the baby he’s holding, who becomes the new Captain America. The only problem there is we already have a new Cap’ – Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson.

All theories for now, of course, but that’s the best we’re going to get for a while. Remember, this is a movie where Robert Downey Jr. will return as Dr. Doom. Anything can happen, but I’ll remain hopeful that the only Evans we’re getting is one via flashbacks until officially shown otherwise.
