In 2021, the now-defunct Parisian animation company Cyber Group Studios announced a Final Fantasy 9 series, but after the studio’s closure earlier this year, its future was left up in the air.
However, according to French magazine Écran Total (via RPG Site), the series has now been picked up by Euro Visual and is aiming for a 2028 release.
“Mel, Kolm, Luciola, Théa, Fala, and Doc, children of the hero Bibi, are the last black mages of the four continents,” the description reads. “Today, they live happily in the city of Alexandria, guarded by its rather friendly, though sometimes very curious, inhabitants. Unfortunately, this peaceful existence was not to last… One day, Kolm discovers Mel, frozen like a statue, in the inn where he works. Could this be the tragic legacy of their father catching up with them?”
The show will reportedly be comprised of 13 episodes, each lasting 22 minutes, and is aimed at children aged 6-13.

Some speculate that the remake (first leaked in the Nvidia GeForce Now breach) was delayed to coincide with the show, but that is incredibly unlikely. Game development is already lengthy and challenging without having to meet arbitrary deadlines like anniverseries or multimedia events, not to mention that Square Enix appears to have an incredibly limited role in the show’s production.
The show was also greenlit in 2021; Square Enix’s plans may have changed since then, as some have speculated happened with the burst of Final Fantasy 9 merchandise. The actual hubbub among leakers is that the remake is on ice, and may even be cancelled.

Thankfully, the original is playable on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, via backwards compatibility, as well as mobile, so there are plenty of ways to try it out today. From someone who got into it just a couple of years ago, it holds up remarkably well.
