Joshua Robertson is a News Editor for TheGamer. When not writing about breaking news, community stories, or covering industry events, you can find him begging FromSoftware for a Bloodborne remaster.

Final Fantasy 14 Patch 7.4 was easily one of the best in recent years, adding a bunch of new raids that are incredibly fun, one of the best MSQ sections for Dawntrail so far, and a lot of quality of life improvements such as the Quick Panel and the removal of glamour restrictions. One of the more overlooked additions to the game, in my eyes, has been the Strategy Board.

Before it came along, Final Fantasy 14 players that liked to dive into extremes and savages on the day of release (hello, it’s me) had to go and make raid plans out of the game, or wait for outside resources such as YouTube video guides. With the Strategy Board, we can now make raid plans in game with highly detailed and intricate markers, and it’s already been a godsend.

However, we should know full well that if you give gamers any kind of system with high levels of customization, you’re going to end up with some cursed results. And while the Strategy Board has been used to help people with extremes and tough fights, it feels like it’s being primarily used to draw cursed art, recreate memes, and all kinds of other goofy uses, some of which border on downright impressive.

One prime example was shared by Reddit user Vanir2 above, as they were hit with a Strategy Board during a Frontline match that was essentially a party-wide Rickroll. Another from Twitter user IGotLocked13 recreated the pointing men wojack, and both of them are honestly quite impressive in how well they’ve managed to capture the feeling of the memes they’re creating.

They’re not quite as impressive as these from a Twitter user called FF14_Wedding though, who has managed to recreate several retro video games using the board. They posted screenshots of boards that depict Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Tetris, and Puyo-Puyo, admitting that they were “using the strategy board wrong, but it was kinda fun anyway.”

Finally, a Twitter user called Fisherfruity recreates an even older game, using the Strategy Board to recreate a game of chess, using the different job markers as game pieces, one side being DPS and the other being healer. It’s actually a pretty functional way to play chess in game too, as these boards can be edited at will, so it’s as good a method as any until we get an official chess minigame. Hey, we got mahjong, so you never know, right?
