From the moment you’re given any amount of freedom in Where Winds Meet, there is a staggering amount of things you can do, either in solo or co-op mode. From beasts to hunt, meals to cook, treasures to plunder, and so much more, it can be hard to get a handle on what you should do first. But pretty early on, you’ll be brought to the General’s Shrine.
Here, Ruby enters you into a competition to win some great prizes, though there are plenty of other quests you can pick up while you’re here. And who would have thought that of all the people ready for battle here, a bunch of children and an old man would prove the most fearsome of all?
Where To Meet Elder Gongsun
Elder Gongsun is overall fairly hard to miss, as you’ll be right beside him in the early stages of the main story. After arriving at the General’s Shrine, you’ll be informed of a competition taking place, with the winner earning themselves a grand prize. You only need to beat a single opponent for this, though there are plenty of others around here who are just as happy to spar with you.
As you walk around the arena, you’ll get a new Encounter quest added to your journal, More Than Meets The Eye. There is a child crying nearby about how they can’t beat anyone here. So you take it into your hands to challenge them all instead. Most of them are children, which are hilariously difficult to beat, but none of them hold a candle to Elder Gongsun himself.
To challenge him, all you have to do is walk up to him and ask for a match. He’ll be marked when you have the Encounter Quest tracked, so you won’t miss him. Just be ready to get beaten.
How To Beat Elder Gongsun
In sparring matches, you do not fight with your own weapons and skills, but with a level playing field. You are given a wooden sword with pre-determined martial arts skills for you to use, and the goal is to completely drain your opponents Qi five times. That’s the blue bar beneath your health which depletes with each hit. Qi is very slow to recover in these matches, and is quick to lose, especially for you.
Martial arts skills deal a lot of Qi damage, so take advantage of them to quickly deplete Gongsun’s Qi.
For Elder Gongsun, he relies on rapid-fire melee strikes, punching and kicking you in an instant. All of these attacks can be deflected, and this will chip away at his Qi as well. It’s hard to land many attacks on him as he will instantly deflect your strikes, so be prepared to deflect his follow-up attacks after he deflects your own.
Time slows down when you dodge an attack at the last second, giving you a short window to land attacks on Gongsun without retaliation. While most of his attacks are fairly well telegraphed, he does have a series of spinning attacks that are very hard to deflect all of. If you can’t get the timing down, use this chance to dodge away instead and attack him from behind while he’s still kicking.
Outside of his melee strikes, Gongsun can also jump atop the poles of the arena, hopping from one to another before slamming back down on you with a powerful attack. This can be two different attacks. One has him take on the form of a frog, which is a red attack that you can deflect for extra Qi damage. The other is a golden kick, so you have o dodge this one to avoid damage.

Finally, Gongsun has the ability to recover his Qi to the max. At times, he will stand away from you and being swaying his arms in fluid motions to fully replenish his Qi. This attack can be canceled, though you’ll need to rely on heavy attacks and martial arts, as regular attacks are unlikely to break his stance. Always keep up the offensive, even when you need to dodge from attacks. Your Qi will never have enough time to recover, but his will.
Do You Need To Beat Elder Gongsun?
If you’re struggling against Gongsun, you might be questioning if you really actually need to beat him. What reward could there possibly be that’s worthwhile? Thankfully, at least as part of the More Than Meets The Eye Encounter quest, you don’t need to beat Gongsun. In fact, you even get an achievement for being beaten by him. He’s meant to be a challenge.
That said, there is a unique reward for beating him, even if you’ve already finished the quest. Which is that he becomes a friend, meaning he will periodically send you gifts. On top of that, he also becomes one of the allies you can summon during particularly challenging boss encounters. Considering how tough he was in his own battle, he’ll surely be a powerful ally to have by your side.
Here are all the currently active reward codes in Where Winds Meet and how to redeem them.
