Where Winds Meet has a surprisingly expansive story, incorporating dozens of legends and bits of culture from the wuxia genre. The first main chapter of the story, Heaven Has No Pier, takes you through the first region of the game, Qinghe, and serves almost as the backstory or origin story for the legend of your character.
The game’s first chapter is divided into four quests, with For Whom Does He Return being the final one. This is a long quest that doesn’t offer many breaks, and even throws in one of the game’s hardest boss fights near the end. If you need some assistance, you’ve come to the right place. Below, we’ll take a complete walkthrough of the final main story quest in Qinghe.
For Whom Does He Return Quest Walkthrough
For Whom Does He Return is automatically started after you recover your hidden treasures and complete the previous quest in the story, Dust on the Rhombus.
Meet Yi Dao At The Ruined Temple
The first step in this quest is to meet Yi Dao back at the ruined temple where you previously fought the Horse Dancer boss. Speak to Yi Dao, and you can ask him about his past and Chu Qingquan. However, during your conversation, you’ll spot shadowy figures arriving on boats, who seem to be heading into Blissful Retreat.
Attack On Blissful Retreat
After you prove your resolve to Yi Dao, jump on his horse and ride into town to stop the invaders. You’ll quickly become separated; when you get back up, fight off the attackers and help Du Qiaoxian, who will tell you about the maze that the village is trapped in, preventing anyone from escaping. Fight off a few more attackers, then head up the path with Du Qiaoxian and Yuan Jin’gang.
Now, you’ll need to inspect points of interest around the village to gather information. There are four points to investigate in total; use the lines around the reticle to find them.
Saving The Villagers
After scouting the vantage point, it’s time to take action. There are three villagers you’ll need to rescue, trapped beneath rubble in crumbling buildings. Rescuing the villagers also involves fighting through several groups of Aureate soldiers, so take care you aren’t ambushed. Follow the quest marker to each trapped villager’s location, deal with the enemies, and rescue them.
Next, you’ll need to save Ruby and Braid; head over to their location, then fight off the enemies that appear. Once they’re defeated, head to Sweetwine Tower, where you’ll find Yi Dao fighting more Aureate soldiers, including an Aureate Commander. Help him finish off these enemies, then discuss your plan with Yi Dao, Ruby, and the other villagers. After all the villagers are safely packed into Sweetwine Tower, you’ll need to fight a few more waves of enemies.
The Final Stand
You rush towards Ruby’s flag, but fall short. Now, you and Yi Dao are once again surrounded by Aureate soldiers. There are several waves to take care of this time, each led by an Aureate Commander. Take out the archers first, then focus your attention on the foot soldiers while letting Yi Dao handle the Commander.
Qianye The Witch
Now, you’ll have to fight Qianye, the witch who is responsible for the array over Blissful Retreat. This boss fight has a few phases. The first phase plays out very similarly to the Heartseeker boss fight from earlier in the story, but things will quickly change in the second phase, where Qianye will use more powerful attacks, including sweeping scythe slashes.
You’ll be able to use Meridian Touch during some of the boss’s attacks to block them and put the boss in a vulnerable state, but failing to do so will result in huge damage and debuffs. When Qianye has around half of her health remaining, she’ll send you to the mirror world, where you’ll face her other half.

This version of Qianye uses similar but different attacks. Primarily, she’ll disappear before charging at you with an overhead slash. Once you’ve nearly depleted the white Qianye’s health bar, she’ll use a reality-shattering attack, switching back to the red Qianye. Deal a bit more damage, and you’ll find yourself back in the real world, where Yi Dao is still fighting.
Watch the cutscenes where you valiantly fight alongside Yi Dao, and you’ll eventually awaken as a horse a few days later.
Homeward Path
Don’t worry, this is normal. As Ruby’s horse, Clip-Clop, follow the quest marker back to your character, where a short cutscene will play. Once the cutscene is over, the quest will be complete.
