After writing for more than two decades and playing video games since the N64’s heyday, Gabrielle loves having married two of her passions in working at TheGamer. She graduated cum laude with a Bachelors in English, she’s written three fiction novels, and she’s always played games in search of completed achievement lists (even before she found a company that’d pay her to do it).

You’ll have plenty of things to worry about exploring as you venture through the ancient world in Where Winds Meet, but if you’re looking for some new martial arts and additional cosmetic items (at the cost of needing to follow a strict set of lifestyle rules), then consider joining a Sect.

With several Sects already available to join in Where Winds Meet and others already in the game and pending exploration in later updates, here’s a look at how to join the Sects in Where Winds Meet, and tips on which you might want to join based on your playstyle.

What Are Sects?

One of many systems you’ll need to consider when building a character in Where Winds Meet, Sects are this game’s iteration of player classes, but they’re ones you’ll choose well after creating your character and choosing your primary combat specialties and Arts related to them. Joining a Sect will enable you to do things including but not limited to:

Use new combat styles, with each Sect offering a few unique new ones exclusive to its members.

Access the Sect Shop and purchase a variety of items only available to members of the named Sect. The selection in each one improves as your reputation within the Sect does, so check back with the Leader periodically.

However, you’ll need to adhere to values for a specific Sect and impress their leader if you’ve got any hope of joining up. Once you do, you’ll need to abide by sets of rules unique to each Sect to maintain your standing within each one. You might notice that these rules occasionally lock you out of quests for the moment, but you can always take them on later if you’ve joined a different Sect.

Neglecting to follow the rules of your sect may lead to punishment, up to and including being banished from the Sect if you continue to go so strongly against the things in which they believe, so be mindful of your actions! These rules will be in line with the new abilities you’ll be granted, like a focus on healing for the Sect mostly composed of healer characters, and they’ll add a whole new layer of focus to your gameplay as you navigate the various quests.

You can also opt to be Sectless in the game, should you decide you’d rather play by your own rules at the cost of the benefits you’d receive by joining one of the Sects.

From the Sect screen in your main menu, you’ll be able to use the Join Sect button in the center along the bottom of your screen to see a list of the Sects in the game. However, the game won’t let you just join a Sect outright – the menu provides an Entry Clue for each Sect instead, which you’ll find as you explore the world.

This menu is an aggregate of the clues you’ve found, offering hints about where you’ll need to go to look for the leader of your chosen Sect. When you’ve located them, to join a Sect in Where Winds Meet, you’ll need to speak to the leader of the Sect in question and obtain a quest from them. It’s a rite-of-passage trial of sorts, which triggers a quest line that you’ll need to complete before you can join the Sect. There can be multiple hints that lead to the same Sect, and your decisions with one Sect may impact the opinion held of you by another.

You can only be part of one Sect at a time in Where Winds Meet. You’ll need to undergo a Severance Trial before you can leave the Sect, and you may need the approval of other members before being allowed to rejoin later should you choose to do so.

Here are all the currently active reward codes in Where Winds Meet and how to redeem them.

In the table below, you can find information on each Sect in Where Winds Meet, including a description of each Sect’s way of life overall, which abilities or skills you’ll unlock as a member, and any rules by which you must abide to remain in good standing with your Sect. Not all Sects can be joined right away, so you’ll find limited information on how to join them.

Sects marked with an asterisk (*) are in the game at the time of publishing, but not much is known about them so far. There are traces of them in the game already, though, so we’ve included what’s known about them so far.

No Living Puppets: Life and death have boundaries; playing with dream puppets is forbidden. Though Heartless Vale Disciples bear poisoned bodies, their hearts are kind. Transforming the living into dream puppets is an ironclad sect rule. Those who experiment on themselves are exempt.

Balance of Life and Death: Where there is life, there must be death; where there is death, there must be life. Heartless Vale’s dual sources of healing and poison must remain balanced. For every life healed, poison must be used once. Failure invites self-inflicted suffering.

Charged Skill: Pale Petal

Special Skill: Echoes of a Thousand Plants

The Riddle of Love: Love’s riddle is life’s hardest. Solve it only once.

Streetwise Strategist: Experience get-rich-quick schemes in streets or lose precept value for -10.

Midnight Judgment: In Midnight Judgment, defeat Sufferers to steal their identities/karma and ascend the Asura Path.

Kill to Seize Karma: Defeat wanderers to gain Karma Points; being defeated deducts Karma Points.

Meditative Samadhi: In the Open World combat, hesitate not, spare no lives.

Universal Love: Love universally, benefit mutually; those who benefit other will in turn be benefited. Self-benefit and benefiting others – this is the way of goodness.

A Thousand Faces: Participate in Disguise, blending into the Nine Mortal Ways to experience diverse lives.

Deceiving Heaven: Failed tricks of jail time deduct Virtue by -10.

Spear Still Sharp: A sword unpolished loses its edge; a spear untested loses its lethality. Raging Tides disciples must hone their spears daily through battle, never slacking.

Shared Healing: Participation in multiplayer healing and succeeding grants precept value +10.

Healing Bodies and Minds: Weekly requirement: Earn at least 15 likes; otherwise, precept value -10.

Charged Skill: Light Dust After Morning Rain

Healing: Emerald Dewtouch

Vermilion Lips: The world is full of sorrow and suffering. Visit the Windtail Lounge to soothe hearts.

Drunk on Flowers: How can one only steal a single heart when drunk on a thousand flowers?

Unrestrained Spirit: Sect may deduct 1,000 Precept Value Points.

Generous and Righteous: Weekly earnings should not be excessive, otherwise precept value suffers -100.

Brotherhood: Disciples of the same sect must not harm one another.
