Baldur’s Gate 3 Fans Want Companions To Have More Influence In Dialogue For Divinity

Baldur’s Gate 3 was a pretty incredible game when it first launched back in 2023, and it has somehow managed to get better and better as the years have gone by, mostly thanks to Larian’s constant tinkering and approval of official mods. If you asked a group of RPG lovers what was the best game they’d played in the past decade, chances are they’d tell you Baldur’s Gate 3.
However, you can’t really make a perfect game these days, as there will be at least one thing that the devs could have done better. Thankfully, Larian is now working on its next game, Divinity, meaning the studio has a chance to right all the wrongs that were in Baldur’s Gate 3, and fans seem to know one place where they can start — with the game’s companions.
Baldur s Gate 3 Fans Want Divinity To Have More Helpful Companions
Thanks to Larian declaring that Divinity will be bigger than Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s felt that this could mean it’s more ambitious, and that certain technical limitations could be solved by the time it rolls around. One of these is the impact that companions have on dialogue, as it seems fans are hoping that Divinity will let them play more of a part in skill checks.
In a recent thread on the Larian subreddit by a user called Herchik, they argue that it’s silly for a character to struggle with something like an Intelligence, Wisdom, or Arcana skill check while having a Mage in the party stood within two meters of a conversation taking place.
Elden Ring and Tears of the Kingdom came close, but nobody has topped Baldur’s Gate 3 just yet.
Instead, they’d prefer some kind of system that would allow party members to butt in on conversations if they have a higher chance of clearing a skill check than others, arguing that it would “make it feel like a party is actually solving things together.” They have a point too, as it can often feel like the party leader in Baldur’s Gate 3 has to be an almighty being to pass all the skill checks you get, and struggling with an Intelligence check while you have Gale in the background does feel a little stupid.
A user called Number1BG3Fan (so you know it’s accurate) says that this would be a good idea since you have “no need to have persuasion/intimidation etc. on anyone other than your Tav” in Baldur’s Gate 3, since they’re the one always doing the skill checks, and that a different system that allowed companions to chime in would “add something unique to the game.”

Some fans have mentioned other games that do something similar, like Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous (which has the best suited character doing the skill check) and Solasta, though we’ll have to see whether this would impact the more cinematic style of conversation that Larian usually goes for in its games. Either way, it would be nice to see a way for this long-time request to be addressed, and if Divinity is going to be as big and ambitious as Larian promises, I have faith that it will find a way.

This is one of my few big gripes with BG3. I want to build a great party, where we complement each other, not a party that only gets violent, or sparky, or horny.
