Several leakers claimed that Half-Life 3 would finally be unveiled in 2025, but as we approach the end of the year, it’s clear that isn’t happening. Fans have taken this to mean that the leakers were wrong or that the game has been cancelled, much like past attempts to continue Gordon’s story, but don’t worry, that isn’t the case.
As reported by Tyler McVicker, the newest Dota 2 update includes several references to ‘HLX’ in the backend, confirming that Valve is still working on the sequel. The subreddit might have collapsed into unbridled chaos, even holding summoning rituals to commune with Gabe Newell, but the idea that Half-Life 3 no longer exists, or never did to begin with, was always baseless.
Much like Half-Life: Alyx, there’s a mountain of datamines that confirm not only that HLX is real, but even what stage of development it’s in. Not being unveiled in 2025 or at The Game Awards (which was always a pipe dream) doesn’t mean that it has been axed. Instead, the announcement appears to have been delayed.
You Can Thank AI For The Delay
That’s according to Insider Gaming senior editor Mike Straw, who claimed that Valve intended to announce Half-Life 3 as a Steam Machine launch title, but the uncertainty around pricing forced them to delay their plans. RAM is getting more and more expensive as manufacturers cut out the consumer and sell directly to AI data centers, while Nvidia just confirmed it will be slashing production for GPUs, so this isn’t a problem that will go away anytime soon.
Should the Steam Machine be delayed while Valve tries to find a solution, it’s entirely possible that Half-Life 3 will be, too. Valve probably doesn’t want to delay Half-Life 3 publicly, given the portal storm of backlash that would invite, so it’s understandable that plans to unveil the game in 2025 were cancelled. By all accounts, both are set to launch sometime in Spring 2026, but with the tech market growing increasingly volatile, there’s a big question mark at the end of that date.

So, Half-Life 3 wasn’t canned. We know it still exists, as per Dota 2 updates, and the announcement was likely slated for 2025 until skyrocketing prices gave Valve cold feet. Hopefully, next year will prove more substantial.
