Josh has been playing video games for longer than he can remember, kicking things off with a Master System before upgrading to a Mega Drive. Covering the industry since 2018, if a game has a strong story – or even better, the decisions you make determine the course of that story – odds are he’s going to like it. Or, you know, put Sonic or Pikachu on the cover and that’ll get his attention too.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick previously suggested Borderlands 4 sales didn’t take off quite as quickly as he and the company had hoped. Either things have changed, or Take-Two has sky-high expectations, as the latest Borderlands title is one of the best-selling games of 2025.
That’s according to the latest data from Circana, shared by Mat Piscatella. While Battlefield 6 tops the chart with NBA 2K26 right behind it, and then Monster Hunter Wilds in third, which, despite its bad press, sold ten million copies in less than a month, Borderlands 4 is right up there with them. The fourth best-selling game of the year in the US, outselling some very big titles.
Borderlands 4 Is Putting Up Bigger Sales Numbers Than We Thought
The most notable omission from those heaviest hitters is Call of Duty. While both Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 are in the top ten, both were outsold by Borderlands 4. The latest Madden and College Football games have also fallen short of Gearbox’s latest game, which, since these numbers are US only, where those games perform best, is particularly impressive.

Whether it’s a letdown or a GOTY contender, Borderlands 4 will be fascinating to discuss.
These numbers aren’t representative of the whole world, of course, but they do provide enough information to glean a decent snapshot of how well Borderlands 4 has performed since it released in September. With Monster Hunter Wilds surpassing ten million sold worldwide, you’d have to think that Borderlands 4 has likely achieved the same, or at least close to it. Especially with it outselling the likes of Black Ops 7 and College Football 26.
Borderlands 4 Has Work To Do To Keep Up With The Rest Of The Series
It was noted at the time when Borderlands 4’s launch sales were referred to as soft that the game is expected to have a long tail. That’s fairly typical of Borderlands games and, even if Borderlands 4 has sold close to ten million copies, may explain why the newest game in the series doesn’t quite measure up yet. Borderlands 3 has sold around 23 million copies, while Borderlands 2 hit 30 million.

It’s also somewhat surprising that Assassin’s Creed Shadows isn’t on this list. There was a time earlier this year that Shadows was one of the best-selling games of the year. Clearly, sales of the popular Ubisoft title have fallen off hard. The game might get a boost from its Switch 2 launch. Those numbers aren’t included here as it released on Switch 2 after November 29, 2025.

we go through this with ever new borderlands game since 2, have SOMETHING for an endgame raid even if its outside of what we can easily do, and get new content in fast, captain scarlett dlc(new weapon type a whole campaign and 2 raid bosses bringing bl2 up too 3 raids you can do) was out in about a month after the launch of the bl2 and we had Gaige drop with that dlc who we got if we preordered, and say what you want about slag being a bad mechanic but uvhm was a huge time sink that helped keep players around in between releases.
Bl4 has been out for 3 months and we have gotten 1 raid boss as new content and the new dlc with the new class character (which is only given to select pre order types and not just the preorder in general so is less appealing) is not slotted till q1 of 2026 so at least 4 months out from launch and up to 6. of course the player base is primmed to plummet.

Asassins Creed isnt on the liste because Ubisoft never claimed to SELL millions of copies, the claimed millions of PLAYERS. Which was not supported by data provided by any online marketplace. People spent years telling Ubi that the game would flop, and they did everything they could to make it appear like it didnt. But it did.
