Helldivers 2 Boss Casually Teases Eight-Player Missions When Discussing The Game’s Distant Future

Josh has been playing video games for longer than he can remember, kicking things off with a Master System before upgrading to a Mega Drive. Covering the industry since 2018, if a game has a strong story – or even better, the decisions you make determine the course of that story – odds are he’s going to like it. Or, you know, put Sonic or Pikachu on the cover and that’ll get his attention too.
Helldivers 2 studio has previously noted that it would rather its game turn into Helldivers 3 than deliberately make a sequel that replaces its predecessor. Now we might know a little bit more about how that will look as the studio’s CCO has name-dropped some of the big differences that could make Helldivers 2 feel like a new game.
Speaking on the Helldivers 2 YouTube channel (via GamesRadar), Arrowhead CCO Johan Pilestedt reiterated the studio’s desire to slowly morph Helldivers 2 into Helldivers 3 rather than down tools on the current game and move onto the next one. However, this time, he mentioned some of the features that might be a part of that gradual transition, with an eight-player mode leading the charge.
Eight Helldivers Are Better Than Four
Pilestedt referred to the changes as “sequel-level features”, and eight-player missions were the first thing he mentioned. The CCO also hinted at much larger maps in the same breath, which I guess would need to be a given if you’re going to have squads twice the size of what the current game was built for, running around fighting bugs and bots.
“The community is pretty good at picking up where they sort of want the game to head when you consider sort of the sequel-esque approach to it”, Pilestedt noted. So if you are a part of the Helldivers community and you see big ideas that come up pretty frequently, odds are there’s a future where those ideas are eventually implemented to help make the sequel feel like its own replacement.
Helldivers 2 Could Eventually Feel A Little More Like Arc Raiders
Not only did Pilestedt speak of a Helldivers future where we’re running around with seven other players, but he also hinted at maps so big that we might end up running into fellow squads on those very same maps. Think Arc Raiders, except rather than trying to decide whether to team up or take each other out, you’re dropping orbital strikes that wipe out an entire squad that was only trying to help as you sheepishly say sorry repeatedly into the mic.
The names I’m going to be called if Helldivers 2 gets all of this along with proximity chat doesn’t bear thinking about.
It’s been almost two years since Helldivers 2’s release provided a surprise hit for PlayStation. Arrowhead has continued to update and add to the game to keep things interesting, and even ported it to Xbox earlier this year. Finally, a PlayStation game on Xbox after so many went the other way. There will inevitably be more, even bigger changes in the future, and while an eight-player mode is still years away, Pilestedt recently confirmed there’s a Helldivers 2 roguelite mode in the works.
