Josh has been playing video games for longer than he can remember, kicking things off with a Master System before upgrading to a Mega Drive. Covering the industry since 2018, if a game has a strong story – or even better, the decisions you make determine the course of that story – odds are he’s going to like it. Or, you know, put Sonic or Pikachu on the cover and that’ll get his attention too.
Metal Gear Solid’s Snake is almost as instantly recognizable while hiding in a cardboard box as he is when he’s just standing there without a disguise. So after the series got its very first Funko Pops earlier this year, it was only a matter of time before an additional figure based on Snake’s boxier look joined the collection.
A first look at the upcoming Snake in Box Funko Pop was shared earlier today (thanks, DisTrackers). An accurate recreation of the box you don to avoid being detected by your enemies – right down to the codes on the front – the Funko Pop version of the iconic video game disguise has been made to look like Snake is wearing the box, but creeping along with it on as his feet are sticking out of the bottom.
Snake Is Back In A Box, And That Snake In A Box Is In A Funko Pop Box
Snake needs to be able to see where he’s going while in the box, of course, and the Pop version of the disguise has that covered, too. The same slot that Snake uses to watch where he’s going is the same one he’s peeking out of as part of the figure. It also gives us an indication as to which version of the character is hiding inside this particular Metal Gear box.
It’s unclear if the box can be removed, and while that’s a possibility, it seems unlikely. The box is likely a part of one solid figure. What’s interesting is the Snake inside doesn’t appear to be based on either of the Pops that were released earlier this year, the pair that kicked off Metal Gear Solid’s Funko Pop collection, and the only figures released so far.
Konami has released a lot of versions of Metal Gear Solid 3. Some are better than others, though.
The Pop inside the box is wearing an eyepatch, whereas the Naked Snake figure released earlier this year is not. Neither is the Boss Pop, but what would she be doing inside the box? That might mean we’re getting more Metal Gear Funko Pops in the future, but for now, I’m just happy we’re getting Snake in Box, particularly when there are now new Metal Gear games on the horizon.
There will be more Metal Gear games, but they will almost certainly be remakes, remasters, and re-releases. Konami has confirmed there will be a Master Collection vol. 2, although when that will be here, and which games it will include, are yet to be confirmed. It also seems pretty likely that there will be more remakes following on from the success of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, especially when, even though it was the third game in the MGS series, it canonically kicks off that particular timeline.
