In The Understatement Of The Century, Bethesda Says It Doesn’t Put Time Pressure On Itself To Get Games Out The Door

Joshua Robertson is a News Editor for TheGamer. When not writing about breaking news, community stories, or covering industry events, you can find him begging FromSoftware for a Bloodborne remaster.
If you can believe it, The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced all the way back in 2018. Yes, that’s right, it’s been well over seven years since we first got that painfully short trailer showing us that now iconic set of mountains, and we still don’t have even a sniff of a reveal trailer in sight. It’s very likely that we’ll be waiting until at least 2028 for any news about a potential release date, meaning Bethesda is going to have been making The Elder Scrolls 6 for over a decade.
We know that game development takes a long time these days, especially the big-budget blockbusters, but over a decade is a very long time to be waiting for a game. It’s very clear from Bethesda’s style of development that it takes its sweet time making games, but just in case you somehow weren’t aware of this fact, folks from Bethesda itself have reminded you.
Bethesda Won t Rush The Elder Scrolls 6, Says Director
In an interview with Game Informer, several directors working on The Elder Scrolls 6 were questioned about how development is going at the moment. Studio design director Emil Pagliarulo was one of these individuals, who simply answers that “it’s going”. He then basically explains that there are no internal time pressures at Bethesda to get The Elder Scrolls 6 out of the door, and while that may seem pretty obvious, Pagliarulo understands that its “frustrating for players who are dying to play a game.”
Skyrim arrived on Nintendo Switch 2 last week, and it’s about to be followed up by another video game legend.
“It’s funny, because the time pressure that players put on us, we don’t put on ourselves,” says Pagliarulo. “And I know that can be frustrating for players who are dying to play a game. Games take a long time, and games get pushed all the time; GTA just got pushed again, which was the smartest thing they could do, because a game the size of these games, they take not just a long time to make, but a long time to spit and polish and iron out the bugs.”
He then backs that up by saying that Bethesda is going to “take [its] time and as long as it needs”, which probably isn’t great to hear if you’re someone that would like to see the game launch this decade, but I say more power to them. If crunch is being avoided and Bethesda can work under no time pressure, then I don’t see any reason to rush them. There are plenty of games coming out every year, some of which scratch the Elder Scrolls itch (cough, Tainted Grail, cough), so I’m more than happy to wait it out.

By the time TES6 drops it will be already irrelevant, I expect. Side note: Let’s see what Bethesda’s opinion on generative AI is. And Rockstar Games also weren’t even asked yet.

I’m not a betting man, but if I was, I’d bet that there are only 2 outcomes to the release of tes6. Either it blows even the likes of skyrim out of the water and goes on to be what would be considered the textbook definition of worth the wait, or it’ll go down in history as the biggest letdown of the gaming industry and we never get another tes game ever again. As someone who is a die hard tes fan who has put well over 9000 hours into skyrim both modded and vanilla, I say let them take as much time as they need. But for the insanely unrealistic amount of time it’s already taken, and the even more unrealistic amount of time it will continue to take, I swear to god Todd, this game better win goty 20 years in a row.
