The Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 movie may have just finally revealed what was hiding in the Five Nights at Freddy’s 4’s locked box that has haunted fans for more than a decade.
As anyone who grew up with the Five Nights at Freddy’s games like me will know, the series is most well-known for its complex and theory-crafting lore. Sure, the creepy animatronics and jumpscares are what got us all interested in the first place, but it’s the bizarre story that’s kept us all around for so long.
While I’d argue the series has gone off the deep end ever since Cawthon’s original games, there are some mysteries that have remained in the decade since the original game released. Perhaps the most infamous is the box shown in Five Nights at Freddy’s 4’s ending, which might have finally been answered in the Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 movie.
Five Nights At Freddy s 2 Finally Reveals What s In The Box
And It s Not As Weird As You d Think
For those who don’t know, completing the seventh and final night of Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 gives you an ending where a locked and unopenable box pops up alongside the message, “Perhaps some things are better left forgotten, for now”. Cawthon originally planned on revealing what was inside the box, before deciding that it was better left as a mystery.
There have been tons of theories about the box’s contents over the years, and Cawthon has even noted that he’s changed his mind on what was in it in that time. It seems that he might finally have reached a conclusion, though, as it makes an appearance in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 and even reveals what’s inside.
As pointed out by Redditor Equivalent-Job-8908 on the Five Nights at Freddy’s subreddit, the FNAF 2 movie has a scene where Vanessa, the daughter of William Afton, is setting up for a dream sequence. As she does, she pulls several items out of the same box from Five Nights at Freddy’s 4, including Garrett’s plane, a mirror, and some marbles.
Since we know that Afton was the one who killed Garrett, this suggests that the box is actually where Afton stores keepsakes from his murders, just like a traditional serial killer. While it’s argued that the Five Nights at Freddy’s movies and games are in separate timelines, it’s worth noting that Cawthon served as the writer for the movie, so the idea very likely comes from him.
I’m still a big fan of Game Theory’s thoughts on what was inside the box, which basically linked together all of the games with different mementos. The movie’s version is kind of in the same veign, to be fair.
Fans seem a little mixed on the reveal, with some saying that it’s just a “hype moment and aura” like the film is filled with, while others say that it makes sense with everything that’s been said about the box in the years since FNAF 4. Considering how unlikely it is that we get another game from Cawthon, this is about as close as we’re ever going to get to a concrete answer on the Box’s contents, though.
