Postal: Bullet Paradise has been completely killed less than 24 hours after its reveal due to concerns from fans that it contained AI-generated assets.
It’s been a while since we’ve had a new Postal game, which is either good news or bad news depending on how you feel about the controversial series. That silence was finally broken yesterday when Running With Scissors revealed the next game in the series, Postal: Bullet Paradise, an online co-op bullet-heaven game with roguelite elements.
The reveal trailer for Bullet Paradise was quickly criticised for appearing to use AI-generated assets, both in the cinematic 2D sequences and the in-game footage. While Running With Scissors was quick to defend the trailer (and even insult fans on its Discord server) and say that AI wasn’t used for its development, it seems that wasn’t the case after all.
Postal: Bullet Paradise Cancelled Less Than 24 Hours After Its Reveal Due To AI Concerns
Goonswarm Games Says AI Wasn t Used, But That It Understands Why Fans Think It Was
Earlier today, Running With Scissors co-founder Vince Desi shared a statement confirming that Postal: Bullet Paradise has been “killed”, less than 24 hours after it was revealed. The publisher explained that it was “overwhelmed with negative responses” from the community, who said that “elements of the game are very likely AI-generated” and have caused “extreme damage to our brand”.
As Death Stranding finally lands into our PS4s, we must take time to remember a game that turned tinkling into an art.
All of this feedback has resulted in Running With Scissors cutting ties with developer Goonswarm Games and completely killing Postal: Bullet Paradise. That means that the game lasted less than 24 hours from its reveal before being cancelled, which surely has to be a world record of some kind.
We’ve always been, and will always be, transparent with our community. Our trust in the development team is broken, therefore we’ve killed the project. – Running With Scissors
Although it might seem like nothing but a good thing that a game using AI has been cancelled so quickly, the statement from Running With Scissors isn’t going down well with fans. Running With Scissors members took to Discord to defend the AI claims before the project was cancelled, which included throwing a lot of insults “in the heat of the moment”.
Interestingly, Goonswarn Games has reacted to the cancellation on Discord and stood by the claims that it didn’t use AI to develop Postal: Bullet Paradise, but that it understands why fans reacted like they did. The team is preparing a statement regarding the game’s cancellation as of the time of writing, but fans have gathered a lot of evidence for what they think are AI-generated assets, so it’s currently unclear what’s actually going on.
