Elder Scrolls’ TV Show Odds Have Gone Up Thanks To Fallout’s Success, Todd Howard Says

Quinton is a Staff Writer from the United States. In his youth, Quinton was ridiculed for making video game ranking lists instead of paying attention in math class. In adulthood, people sometimes pay him for it. Life’s a trip.
Taking his first steps into the industry in 2020, Quinton has written for several digital publications, but his permanent literary home is right here at TheGamer.
Before striking up a conversation with Quinton, consider the risks: he’ll find a way to transform almost any topic into an analysis of either world history, Star Trek, or – at least this one’s relevant to his career – all his favorite role-playing games.

That’s right, I’m using a pic of Dagoth Ur even though we all know any hypothetical Elder Scrolls television adaptation would be modeled after either Oblivion, Skyrim, or something altogether new. Whatever. I’ll hold on to hope for as long as it takes.

And, as it happens, it might not take an eternity, after all. Todd Howard didn’t initiate the following comment, which I reckon is important to emphasize before we dive in. This wasn’t an off-the-cuff tease. Nevertheless, it’s precisely the sort of sly Todd reply that’s going to get folks talking for days, weeks, months to come. Rightly so.

Eurogamer’s Mat Jones didn’t miss an opportunity to present Todd Howard with the obvious must-query while he had Bethesda’s most famous face in the hot seat. With Fallout being such a runaway success for Amazon Prime, fan speculation has gone wild that, surely, a television spin on The Elder Scrolls is either inevitable or close enough to it. You don’t have to go far to find folks who are wish-casting with their preferred actors, spitballing ideas on how to handle canon, and generally having a blast pretending that it’s a done deal and we just haven’t heard about it yet.

That may or may not be the case, but Howard’s recent words are already sparking newfound chatter. “I will say this. The Fallout journey was like a 10-year one,” he answered after Jones dug in for hints on a TES made-for-TV extravaganza. “After Fallout 3, people were asking to do a movie or show for Fallout, and we really took our time.” They certainly did – Fallout 3 launched in 2008, and the show hit Prime just last year.

Regarding The Elder Scrolls, however, Howard was a tad less tight-lipped than usual:

“…You never know. I think the impact of the show on Fallout as a franchise has been bigger than I expected. So, it does make you think, like, ‘hey, is there a path [for an Elder Scrolls series]’?”

In my amateur estimation, Todd Howard’s “make you think” moments can sometimes be teases for something that’s already in development. Just the same, this might not be one of them. “Nothing today” is the official Howard logline, and more to the point, he adds that he’s “willing to say ‘no’ for a decade.” Given the broader context of his statements here, he might want us all to know that while there’s a fair chance that it’s coming in the wake of Fallout’s success, we’ll be waiting for a long, long time.

That’s fair. Take your time, Todd. Find the right people. And get Dagoth Ur in there. I don’t ask for much.
