Divinity: Original Sin 2 Just Got A Current-Gen Upgrade, And It’s Free If You Already Own The Game

divinity original sin 2. Larian 4

Josh has been playing video games for longer than he can remember, kicking things off with a Master System before upgrading to a Mega Drive. Covering the industry since 2018, if a game has a strong story – or even better, the decisions you make determine the course of that story – odds are he’s going to like it. Or, you know, put Sonic or Pikachu on the cover and that’ll get his attention too.

Larian revealed its next game after Baldur’s Gate 3 at The Game Awards, Divinity. A follow-up to the series it was working on before stepping into the world of D D, and while you wait for the new Divinity, you can now finally play a native version of its predecessor on current-gen consoles.

Larian broke the good news by shadow dropping the current-gen version of Divinity: Original Sin 2 on all relevant platforms. That’s PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and even Nintendo Switch 2. Best of all, if you already own the game on any of the last-gen versions of those consoles, you can upgrade to the shiny new version of the Larian hit for free.

Original Sin 2 s Current-Gen Upgrade Is Free If You Already Own The Game

There were rumblings that Larian might have been planning to bring Original Sin 2 to the latest platforms following a rating for the updated version of the game last week. That rating came before the new Divnity was revealed on Thursday, fueling the belief that the mysterious statue in the desert might have something to do with the series that has been lying dormant while Larian has been working on Baldur’s Gate 3.

Even if you don’t already own Original Sin 2 and therefore its current-gen upgrade path isn’t available to you, if you want to find out what Divinity is all about before the new installment arrives, now is the best time to dive in. Original Sin 2 is currently 75 percent off on select platforms, which means you can get it for just $14.99 rather than the usual $59.99 whether you’re playing it on old or new platforms.

You Don t Need To Have Played Original Sin To Enjoy And Understand Original Sin 2

Much like Baldur’s Gate 3, even though Original Sin is a numbered game, you don’t need to have played its predecessor to become fully invested in its sequel. While Original Sin 2 shares locations and characters that were featured in the first game, its an original story and the game stands alone as its own thing.

Its creators are keen to highlight that will be the case for Divinity, too. Larian is well aware that the next Divnity will have a far larger audience than the first two games thanks to the following it has accrued via Baldur’s Gate 3. That’s why it has brought Original Sin 2 to all current-gen platforms, and cut its price by 75 percent, to demonstrate to Baldur’s Gate fans that it creates great games, even without the likes of Shadowheart and Astarion.

Last week’s Divinity reveal alone resulted in a huge uptick for Original Sin 2’s player count. The release of its current-gen upgrade will boost those numbers even further, and if Baldur’s Gate 3’s long tail is anything to go by, people will still be playing it whenever Divinity arrives. I’m assuming its launch is still a long way off.

While it’s true that you don’t have to have played D:OS to enjoy D:OS2, the world (and most of the lore) is carried across the games. If you’ve played the original, you’ll see wonderful expansions of the original stories fleshed out more in the sequel. And you’ll have a deeper understanding of current stories if you know them from the original. You may also have earlier knowledge of an extra recipe or two in the crafting system than if you’d just learn it in the current game. (Often, craft recipes for simple items will work before you read or learn about them in main story plot of the game. That both encourages experimentation and rewards those who have played past games.)

From the released sneak-peak video, I’m guessing the new game is actually going to be a prequel to D:OS(1/2). At least two of the main story lines (around Lucian and Bracus Rex) have hints of past events that echo the images and iconography seen in the video. Either way, I’m super looking forward to more lore, stories, and game play.
