Divinity Will Feature Characters From Original Sin 2, And Players All Know Who They’re Talking About

Jack Coleman (He/Him) is a News Editor from Ireland. This is his third full year in games media, having previously worked freelance for various outlets, including DualShockers and NME.
Previously, he’s interviewed breakout indie developers, broken big news stories, reviewed massive releases and recounted his time living as a humble woodsman in Oblivion.
A lifelong gamer, Jack is primarily interested in RPGs and narrative experiences. He’s also been playing League of Legends for a decade, unfortunately.
In celebration of the reveal of Divinity, Larian shadowdropped current-generation console versions of Divinity: Original Sin 2. Accompanying the release was a blog post from the studio, which included a morsel of information that delighted fans of the series.
“Divinity will offer a completely new story, but there’s some continuity and characters for those who’ve played previous games. You might even pick up on certain things others may not!,” reads the frequently-asked-questions section of the post.
Predictably, this immediately led to speculation about which characters that appeared in Divinity: Original Sin could potentially appear in Divinity. It’s no easy feat to predict these appearances, because we know very little about the timeline of the upcoming game. It seems likely that Divinity will occur between Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Divine Divinity, which is a window of about 1,200 years.
Old Faces, Same Results
The vast majority of the commenters on a thread about the topic all had the same prediction: somehow… Braccus Rex has returned. The former tyrannical ruler of Rivellon has become a meme in the Divinity community over the years because of Larian’s penchant for resurrecting the ‘Source King’ whenever they need a villain with a threatening aura.
Braccus Rex was a brutal tyrant who ruled over Rivellon several thousand years before the events of Original Sin. He is resurrected in both Original Sin and Original Sin 2, and is swiftly defeated by the player and their party both times.
“At this point, he’s a joke character. His most memorable trait is that he instantly gets his ass kicked every time he shows up,” comments Raulr100, summarising the current perception of Braccus Rex in the community.
Braccus Rex isn’t the only character that people think may return, however. Any character considered immortal in the lore could feasibly return in Divinity, because they can’t canonically die during the events of Original Sin.
NoGood0ption suggests Malady, the half-demon who aids the party in Original Sin 2, could be a returning character. There’s also Fane, Lucian, Damian, Dallis, Tarquin… the various demonic characters we’re forced to interact with and more. Any one of them is a potential inclusion in Divinity.
Larian is aware that Baldur’s Gate 3 has given them a massive new audience, and, as such, is likely to apply past lore sparingly so new players don’t become lost and/or alienated by the plot. Still, there will likely be a couple of cameos for returning fans to sink their teeth into when Divinity does eventually release.
