Hollow Knight: Silksong’s Free DLC Expansion Has Fans Begging Team Cherry To Take Their Money

Joshua Robertson is a News Editor for TheGamer. When not writing about breaking news, community stories, or covering industry events, you can find him begging FromSoftware for a Bloodborne remaster.

It’s pretty easy to become cynical when it comes to the games industry these days, with Xbox telling us all it needs to charge $80 for its games to run a successful business, and consoles getting more expensive when we used to live in a time when they actually got cheaper. However, every now and again, a game comes along that is such good value for money that you can’t help wish that the studio behind it would actually be a little greedier to stop you feeling so guilty.

No Man’s Sky developer Hello Games is one such studio, which routinely has fans begging for CEO Sean Murray to start charging for the game’s numerous free expansions that it’s received over the course of its redemption arc. Well, now we can add Team Cherry to that illustrious group too, as something very similar is happening following the surprise reveal of Hollow Knight: Silksong’s new DLC expansion Sea of Sorrows, which is launching in 2026.

Across both Reddit and Twitter, you’ll be able to find plenty of jokes and memes from Silksong fans begging Team Cherry to take their money, some of them appropriated from the No Man’s Sky community as well. The Reddit thread above by a user called Shadbin is one such example, and while the core of the post is obviously a joke, there’s a real desire from some wanting to give Team Cherry more money in an attempt to support the studio further.

In the replies, a user called BranSal says that they “feel bad” for getting Silksong for cheap, and wants to “give them my money because they made and continue to make incredible things.” Throughout the replies, you’ll also find calls from people telling others to buy official merch, the game’s soundtrack, or even another copy of the game for a friend if they want to show continued support.

It’s a similar story on Twitter too, as a post from a user called Verdantmosu screaming “NO TEAM CHERRY I HAVE MONEY” has racked up a whopping 18k likes. It’s kind of lovely to see so many people coming out in support of an indie studio, especially one which has been surprisingly generous by just charging $20 for such a massively anticipated title.

Then again, this kind of reaction isn’t really that new among the general gaming populace. Shortly after Hollow Knight: Silksong launched earlier this year, it was unsurprisingly cracked by pirates, but instead of them rushing to grab their free game, a lot of pirates urged others to go out and buy this one. When you even have video game pirates willing to spend money on you, that’s when you know you’ve won over the hearts of the people.
