Battlefield 6 Player Numbers At An All-Time Low After Failed Winter Offensive Update

Writer based in London, UK. Several years writing guide coverage for some of the largest video game launches, with a focus on MMOs.
Battlefield 6’s latest update, the Winter Offensive event and the 1.1.3.0 patch, has been widely slammed by players. I covered the poor rollout in a news article that was titled “It’s Broken Everything”, and I was a bit worried about journalistic hyperbole. It turns out, however, that the update did literally break everything. Including the game’s Steam numbers, which hit their lowest peak since launch following the update December 9th.
I’m an avid Battlefield 6 player and the game has felt off since the update yesterday. Hit registration is weird, the menu is bugged, I have some frustrating audio bugs, my game keeps freezing on the scoreboard…the list goes on. And those are just my issues. There are a lot more out there.
The General Sentiment Is: We re Going To Wait For A Hotfix
It’s currently off-peak in the EU, and player numbers have hit an all-time low of 50,000 players on Steam. The 24-hour peak is at just 107,000. I know that often we obsess over player numbers even though, in the grand scheme of things, they mean very little. Games wane and peak, that is the natural cycle.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s music spells out the ending and some of the game’s big twists.
This also doesn’t take into account console player numbers, but if the community is anything to go by, the game is just as broken on consoles as it is on PC.
However, to see a significant drop after a patch suggests that whatever was in the patch, probably isn’t working as intended. Unfortunately, the Winter Offensive update has caused more issues than it solved, leaving most players eagerly awaiting some emergency hot fixes before attempting to play the game.
The most frustrating bug is the menu bug. At the moment, it’s impossible to select which game mode you want to play. I’ve tried every type of input to see if it works, including plugging a controller into my PC, and nothing. I can see players logging in, trying to join a game, and just giving up.
The Battlefield Comms team on X.com have posted a single statement since the update launched.
Ah, the classic ‘turn it off and on again’ to remedy the menu issue. For the record, this does actually work, but as soon as you go into another game and re-enter the menu, it’ll be bugged again.
I’m currently working on a list of everything that is currently broken in Battlefield 6, but just to give you a teaser:
Hit registration feels inconsistent.
The game freezes when opening the scoreboard when respawning, forcing you to restart the game.
