Jack Coleman (He/Him) is a News Editor from Ireland. This is his third full year in games media, having previously worked freelance for various outlets, including DualShockers and NME.
Previously, he’s interviewed breakout indie developers, broken big news stories, reviewed massive releases and recounted his time living as a humble woodsman in Oblivion.
A lifelong gamer, Jack is primarily interested in RPGs and narrative experiences. He’s also been playing League of Legends for a decade, unfortunately.

Tim Cain—creator of the original Fallout and veteran game developer—has announced that he’s coming out of retirement to re-join Obsidian Entertainment on a full-time basis.

Over the past couple of years, Tim Cain has been regaling the community with excellent insights from his long career as a developer. Cain on Games grew into a popular repository for wisdom on world-building, magic systems, RPGs and general game development practices. Now, Cain has announced his move from Seattle to Irvine, where Obsidian is based.

The Return of the King

Cain departed Obsidian in 2020, after directing the original The Outer Worlds. He acted as a part-time creative consultant on the second instalment of the series, and has now returned to the studio he spent nine years at between 2011 and 2020.

“I can’t talk about the project I’m working on at Obsidian, just because that’s covered under NDA,” Cain explains. “Don’t bother guessing, you’re not going to guess right. I would say I’m a lot less retired than I was before.”

Thankfully for fans of Cain on Games, the channel will continue despite Cain’s full-time work at Obsidian.

“This channel’s going to keep going. No one at Obsidian has even remotely suggested that I have to stop it. In fact, many of my co-workers have said they watch this channel. And I know they did because they started telling me which videos were their favourites, or which stories I told that they thought were funny.”

Cain’s advice not to guess what game he’s working on has fallen on deaf ears, as fans are beginning to speculate that ‘the band is getting back together’ for something big over at Obsidian.

“Might mean we’ll get a new Fallout this decade,” writes Duxxy3 on ResetEra. “At face value, that would appear to rule out Fallout: New Vegas 2, as that would be most people’s first guess. That said, he might be bluffing,” comments Hoverhand in the same thread.

There’s plenty of speculation about Fallout: New Vegas 2 accompanying this announcement, though Cain never actually worked on New Vegas; Cain was working for NCSoft at the time and only joined Obsidian a year after New Vegas released. However, he’s a Fallout legend and has been following the series closely since creating it in the mid-’90s.
