A Core Dispatch Character Was Meant To Stay Dead In Season One, And Fans Are Surprisingly Into It

Josh has been playing video games for longer than he can remember, kicking things off with a Master System before upgrading to a Mega Drive. Covering the industry since 2018, if a game has a strong story – or even better, the decisions you make determine the course of that story – odds are he’s going to like it. Or, you know, put Sonic or Pikachu on the cover and that’ll get his attention too.
Dispatch has been the latest release in a run of surprise hits in 2025, with a cast of characters many of us have already fallen in love with. Turns out one of those characters was originally supposed to die – and stay dead – in season one, but the team behind the hit superhero game changed their minds.
There are some very heavy spoilers for Dispatch season one, including its final episodes, from this point on.
Speaking with Eurogamer about all things Dispatch and how the project came together, the team at AdHoc revealed Chase, one of the game’s lead characters played by Jeffrey Wright, was going to die. In the first draft of the script, Chase was going to die at the end of the season. That was until AdHoc co-founder Pierre Shorette questioned why they were killing him off.
Chase Was Meant To Die At The End Of Dispatch Season One
“I liked him. Why the f**k would we kill a character we like? It was so hard to get people to like him. Why would we throw that away?” Shorette said. Chase, whose superpower is superspeed but he also ages at superspeed when using it, seemingly dies at the end of episode six. However, the hero is brought back from the brink and is still alive and doing well by the end of the season.
You might think the responses to the reveal that AdHoc saved Chase’s life would be filled with thank yous, but no. While some Dispatch fans are relieved the script was changed, the overwhelming response to the decision to keep Chase alive seems to be that the dev team made the wrong call.
Dispatch Fans Are Worried AdHoc Is Too Scared To Kill Off Its Characters
The biggest fear among fans is that they believe these comments are AdHoc confirming core characters are never going to die. “Saying this is basically telling your players, ‘Don’t worry about season two, we’re not going to actually kill off anyone you like.’ You’ve just killed half the investment in Chase’s character,” Vlover150 writes on Twitter.
GeminiJack11, whose response to the reveal of AdHoc’s original plans for Chase is one of the most-liked, claims it wasn’t hard to like Chase at all, and that had he actually died, it would have given the events of season one more meaning. Others have noted that they’d rather have a character they like die with meaning than have them brought back and be devalued, which is what some fans believe was the case with Chase in Dispatch’s final episodes.
One of the reasons Dispatch is so popular is because it falls into the same category as shows like The Boys and Invincible. One of the biggest selling points of those shows is that anything can happen, and anyone can die at any moment, even core characters. It’s understandable why writers would be reluctant to do that with characters they’ve worked so hard on, but Dispatch might need more of that in season two after revealing it intentionally pulled back on doing so in season one.
