It’s been two months since the release of The Outer Worlds 2. The consensus on Obsidian’s latest offering is another respectable first-person role-playing game, albeit with a couple of minor flaws.
A recent Reddit thread from Objective_Love_6843 queried players on what their feelings are about the game a couple of months on from release. These are always interesting threads, because people tend to react emotionally to a game after they’ve just purchased it, and form more nuanced opinions after reflection and time away from a game.
Capped Power
Overwhelmingly, the biggest complaint on the thread concerns the game’s level cap. The Outer Worlds 2 caps the player at Level 30, which allows you to unlock only a fraction of the skill tree before reaching the cap.
This is completely by design, because Obsidian obviously wants to encourage replayability. However, the completionist impulse in every player’s brain becomes irritated when they can’t fill out the majority of a skill tree by the end of a playthrough.
Most players are enjoying The Outer Worlds 2, but some are encountering bugs that wipe hours of experience.
“I lost most of my motivation to do side quests when I capped at 30. Pretty lame to be honest,” writes Mediwyat; “Felt kind of tedious but fun scavenging, then all of a sudden, level cap and exploring became pretty worthless,” adds rt30000.
This frustration may come from the genre mash-up that is The Outer Worlds 2. It’s clear Obsidian chose to pursue a more computer role-playing game (CRPG) approach with the sequel, leaning into the studio’s roots. This genre is known for creating an opportunity cost with builds, and having clearly defined characters that aren’t exactly jack-of-all-trades. It’s a role-playing game, you want your character to have defined traits.
However, RPG/shooter mash-ups like Borderlands adopt a different approach and place less of a focus on role-playing and more of a focus on allowing players to scale exponentially. At the very least, Obsidian will likely raise the level cap when The Outer Worlds 2’s expansions are released.

There are a couple of other complaints about how exploration becomes tedious after a couple of acts, which appears to be an inherent flaw of Obsidian’s current formula. Once again, a tighter experience like an expansion should also address this complaint.

I understood the level cap. As you said it’s not Skyrim where you can be the master of everything. That said you can basically do everything on one build depending on your choices. Don’t spread your points out, except for maybe a couple of points in guns.

i think the point was more that they left room to grow in to future content. its “flaws” are completely reasonable as they are. if not everyone wants to explore every nook and cranny thats fine.

The level cap honestly is fine. The whole game is designed around it – the end game content is already more than doable at cap. If there was more content, sure. Raise it. But it’s fine as is.
