Pluribus Fans Unearth Archive Footage Of Rhea Seehorn In A Low-Budget Magic: The Gathering Video Game

Josh has been playing video games for longer than he can remember, kicking things off with a Master System before upgrading to a Mega Drive. Covering the industry since 2018, if a game has a strong story – or even better, the decisions you make determine the course of that story – odds are he’s going to like it. Or, you know, put Sonic or Pikachu on the cover and that’ll get his attention too.

Rhea Seehorn has become a household name thanks to Better Call Saul and now Pluribus. However, almost two decades before the majority of us really got to know her, she was the star of a Magic: The Gathering video game tutorial.

When you see Rhea Seehorn or hear her name, you either think of Kim Wexler from Better Call Saul, or Carol Sturka from Pluribus, the first season of which just came to an end. Fans of her work in those shows have been delving into her back catalog in an attempt to catch up on some of the work she did before becoming more famous, and the standout discovery is a starring role in a Magic: The Gathering video game.

Not only have Seehorn fans discovered that the Pluribus actor is a part of MTG history, but they have even managed to unearth the archive footage. The clip below shows Seehorn in MTG-appropriate attire with a castle-like backdrop. She, along with her co-star, explains how land cards work and that the player will need some red mana if they wish to cast a red spell.

Among the many cards released in MTG this year, these top 20 stand as the very best you can put in your deck ahead across different formats.

Seehorn did a lot more than just explain how land and mana work. She held MTG players’ hands every step of the way while they learned how to play the card game in an entirely different way. If you don’t fancy trying to find a copy of the game and playing through it so you can see everything Seehorn had to offer in what was her first-ever acting credit, according to IMDb, you can check out a compilation of all her cutscenes below.

Sadly, Seehorn’s character in the MTG video game didn’t have a name. She is simply credited as Soceress. Having seen the discovery pick up momentum, Seehorn was asked what she remembers about it, and despite almost three decades having passed since her first, and to this day only, appearance in a video game.

A Game With A Budget So Low, Its Actors Had To Pretend They Were Wearing Shoes

“Me and an actor named Reggie, we were playing Sorcerer and Sorceress, and it was so low budget that they didn’t have shoes, but they wanted us to look like we were wearing kind of gladiator sorcerer boots,” Seehorn revealed. “So we’re just wearing tube socks with electrical tape in criss-cross fashion.”

Seehorn was so excited about her first acting role that she went to Best Buy when the game launched to see herself on the back cover, but she couldn’t afford to actually buy the game. She asked if she could have a free copy, pointing to the picture of herself on the case, but was told no.

Hard to imagine a Magic: The Gathering that couldn’t afford appropriate footwear for its actors when looking at what the card game has become since then. Its Universes Beyond crossovers are big business with the incredibly popular Final Fantasy set smashing revenue records. I’d also hazard to guess that now Seehorn’s MTG appearance is becoming common knowledge, she might end up signing a copy or two in the near future.
