James Lucas is an Executive Editor from Newcastle, England. They have written for sites like IGN, NME, GaymingMag, and VG247, with a special focus on FPS games, Soulslikes, and survival horror.

For the last week, Fallout fans have been bickering nonstop over Caesar in the Prime Video series; ‘Why is he not using a displacer glove!?’, ‘Why did Amazon recast John Doman?’, ‘Why is the Legion suddenly cozy with pre-war tech?’ All because of a brief clip showing Caesar with an AK-47.

In what is fast becoming an evergreen statement, just wait a few days and you’ll find out! You don’t need to hurl mininukes at the showrunners and burn the forums to the ground in protest every week.

The ‘Caesar’ we’ve seen so far is not the same Edward Sallow who founded the Legion, but a new leader who took his place when he died. If that comes as a shock, go back and play New Vegas, because it’s been clear since 2010 that he didn’t have long left.

Sallow revealed to the Courier that he had a fatal brain tumour, making it increasingly difficult for him to run the day-to-day operations of his Legion. So, even if he survived the Battle of Hoover Dam, his terminal illness would undoubtedly get the better of him.

Caesar s Legion Is In The Throes Of A Civil War, With Two Pretenders Fighting For The Crown

As alluded to in the games, through several NPCs and the end credit cards, his death paralleled the real Julius Caesar, sending the Legion into complete chaos, sparking a civil war among his supporters.

Lucy enters the camp in her ill-fated rescue mission to find it split down the middle, literally, with two Caesars vying for Sallow’s throne. His corpse, now a skeleton (and wearing the displacer glove!), has a note buried in its pocket naming his true successor. Whoever that is probably doesn’t matter by now, given how long the Legion has been at a standstill, though it’s safe to assume it would have been Legate Lanius, since he takes over should you kill Sallow in New Vegas.

It was also confirmed that Mr House is “gone”, though that doesn’t mean he’s dead.

The civil war comes to a head in Episode 3 after The Ghoul blows a hole in the centre of camp when rescuing Lucy, but we can already take a wild guess at who might win, and it isn’t either of the Caesars currently laying claim to the throne. Based on early trailers, it looks like Macaulay Culkin’s character, whoever that might be, will pry the mantle of Caesar from their corpses, reuniting the Legion under one banner at long last.

If he’s Lanius, expect even more discourse, but for now, Amazon remains tight-lipped on his true identity.
