We’re Not Getting New Deus Ex Games Because The Owners Are “Psychopaths” According To Lead Actor

Jack Coleman (He/Him) is a News Editor from Ireland. This is his third full year in games media, having previously worked freelance for various outlets, including DualShockers and NME.
Previously, he’s interviewed breakout indie developers, broken big news stories, reviewed massive releases and recounted his time living as a humble woodsman in Oblivion.
A lifelong gamer, Jack is primarily interested in RPGs and narrative experiences. He’s also been playing League of Legends for a decade, unfortunately.

Deus Ex (2000) is an iconic PC game, and (along with System Shock and Thief) is responsible for establishing the underappreciated immersive sim genre of games.

The original was followed by the less popular Deus Ex: Invisible War in 2003, before Eidos-Montréal revived the series after an 8-year hiatus with Human Revolution in 2011. This duology was completed in 2016 with Mankind Divided, and the series has been dormant ever since, besides the controversial remake of the original currently in development at Aspyr Media.

In a world where new intellectual property is considered too risky by many publishers, it’s strange that a series with the name recognition of Deus Ex hasn’t been dusted off for a 2020s reboot. The reason? Well, according to Elias Toufexis—the actor behind Human Revolution/Mankind Divided protagonist Adam Jensen—it’s because the owners of the license are “psychopaths” (thanks, FRVR).

No Love Lost For Embracer Group

This arose when Toufexis posted a preview of the projects he would be appearing in, in 2026. The image showed Bungie’s Marathon and three projects currently under NDA, which led one replier to speculate that Toufexis may be appearing in a new Deus Ex. The actor’s response was emphatic.

“… no Deux Ex because the people in charge are psychopaths,” wrote the actor. Eidos-Montréal owns Deus Ex, and the studio in turn is owned by the mega-holding company Embracer Group. The latter is controversial in the industry for rapidly purchasing studios, implementing cost-cutting measures and producing very little end product despite the resources available to the company.

There was a new Deus Ex project in development at Eidos-Montréal between 2002 and 2004, though Toufexis (and consequently Adam Jensen) weren’t involved. This project was ultimately cancelled by Embracer, which resulted in 172 people being laid off from the studio over the following months.

In a Reddit post in 2024, Toufexis gave his external perspective on the cancelled project, writing, “I’m relatively certain the game that was cancelled was not an Adam Jensen story, so the cancellation angers me more than anything else because friends at Eidos got laid off. Video game companies now are in a weird place. I hope it gets straightened out.”

The lay-offs have likely contributed to Toufexis’ feelings towards Embracer, and he’s not alone in holding resentment towards the company.

“Video game companies now are in a weird place.”

Well, yeah. When studios want us to pay $100 or more for AI slop, bad writing and buggy, rushed or untested titles because the suits are more important than the gamers, well, you get what you pay for. Most triple A games are garbage now. Larion proved with BG3 that you don’t need to spend hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars on game development if you start with a good story and build your game around it. Most studios now are paying for the suits’ opinions, and they’re not listening to the very people whose money they’re trying to get. Yes, I’m looking at you, Bethesda. At the end of the day, it’s not the suits who are buying your game, so why let them dictate anything? Sure, you need some of them for the start-up capital, but if you make a good product, your return on investment is basically guaranteed.

WTH are you even talking about? Starfield was the passion project of Todd Howard himself, nothing to do with suits and no AI involved.

Stop repeating the rubbish the crapfluencers spout for algorythm views and do your own research.

Gamers mike you are part of the problem.

Look at ARC Raiders, uses AI voices and no-one care one of the most popular games right now.

Also Baldurs Gate 3 cost $100,000,000 to make.

Rekt Wow. Someone has their panties in a knot! I didn’t say anything about Starfield, though since you brought it up, yes, it was crap. Not AI crap, but still crap. Bethesda has a track record of releasing buggy, incomplete games which they charge a lot of money for, and expect the paying customer to do the bug testing for them. Yes, BG3 cost an ESTIMATED cool hundred million, over six years but that was a gamble from Larion. If it didn’t pay off, they would have been in serious trouble. They didn’t over promise then under deliver. Bethesda has become FAMOUS for that. I played No Man’s Sky and it was significantly better than Starfield. The supposed “open world” being not really truly open. The only rubbish I see here is your inept defense of a single game that nobody even mentioned. You probably thought Dragon Age Veilguard and Redfall were amazing too. If I had to guess, I’d say you’re probably not even 35 yet. Come back after you have another decade of game experience.
