Pre-Release Version Of Spore With Cut Features And New Creatures Released By Game Preservationists

Spore Little Blue Creature 4

Jack Coleman (He/Him) is a News Editor from Ireland. This is his third full year in games media, having previously worked freelance for various outlets, including DualShockers and NME.
Previously, he’s interviewed breakout indie developers, broken big news stories, reviewed massive releases and recounted his time living as a humble woodsman in Oblivion.
A lifelong gamer, Jack is primarily interested in RPGs and narrative experiences. He’s also been playing League of Legends for a decade, unfortunately.

The Hidden Palace, a group of game preservationists, has released a beta version of Spore (2008) that’s dated six months before the final version of the game.

Spore has a development cycle so well-documented that it has an entirely separate Wikipedia page, which details the many twists and turns the simulation game underwent at the studio behind The Sims.

Spore was originally envisioned as a more realistic and scientific depiction of evolution, but gradually morphed into the cuter version of the game that was eventually released. There were two camps at Maxis: one that wanted a cuter aesthetic and one that wanted more scientific realism, with the final release being a compromise between the two.

A Massive Find

The interesting nature of the development cycle is precisely why seeing an earlier version of the game is so fascinating. According to The Hidden Palace, this version of Spore has “many cut creatures, features, debug editors and overlays, a planet editor, a cut flora editor, an animation viewer, a model viewer, and much more cut content.”

The sheer number of debug menus and editors available in this build is sure to be a massive boon for Spore’s modding community. The community at large has expressed excitement regarding the discovery, expressing their delight on the game’s subreddit.

“Functional flora editor, functional terrain editor, animation viewer, early E3 dev menu. So so many small changes, ones we’ve seen before in blurry press photos and leftover strings,” writes MedicInDisquise. “Early and raw as hell space stage. So many debug menus. I cannot underestimate how absolutely insane this find is. Whoever was the anonymous guy who donated it, hats off.”

“Man, I discovered so freaking much just from exploring for 2 hours, and I’m not even that savvy with Spore debugging tools. Imagine what we’ll find when the real experts start to delve deeper into the build,” comments Dolph_Inho.

The newly formed YouTube channel Games’ Past has uncovered a whole bunch of old Fallout: New Vegas prototypes, dating as far back as 2009.

Others are bemoaning the amount of additional content present in this earlier build when compared to the final release, which is accompanied by the usual fist-raising towards Electronic Arts, the publisher of Spore.
