A Hollow Knight: Silksong fan has unearthed a cutscene in the Switch release’s files that could be linked to the recently announced Sea of Sorrow DLC.
One of the defining traits of Hollow Knight: Silksong is how long it took for Team Cherry to put together, a fact that every fan is painfully aware of. With such a lengthy development timeline, there’s bound to be a ton of concepts and ideas that didn’t end up making it into the final game.
We actually already know about some elements of Hollow Knight: Silksong that were cut before launch, such as The Citadel’s original name being City of Song and the removal of an entire area, Red Coral Gorge. It seems that’s just the tip of the iceberg, though, as one fan has found a removed cutscene that’s either tied to the cut content or linked to the upcoming DLC.
Silksong s Files Have A Submarine Cutscene From 2020 That s Not In The Final Game
Has Team Cherry Been Planning The DLC For That Long?
Over on the Hollow Knight subreddit, Redditor Old_Ambassador1702 shared a hidden cutscene that was discovered in the Switch version of the game before the announcement of the Sea of Sorrow DLC. The cutscene, which is titled “Submersible_Travel.mp4”, shows a submarine travelling through some water in a similar manner to the Bell Beast when you fast-travel.
I am sat here eating popcorn while Hollow Knight: Silksong and Geof Keighley duke it out.
The cutscene seems to suggest some kind of underwater transport was planned for Silksong at some point in development. After sharing the cutscene on Reddit, fans were able to uncover its metadata, which suggests that it was made all the way back in 2020, five whole years before Silksong’s release.
Considering how far Silksong fans have dived into the game’s files, I’m a little surprised that this cutscene hasn’t been spotted before now. Thank god it’s not a Silkpost for once.
While this date does suggest that the cutscene could have been linked to the Red Coral Gorge before it was cut from the game entirely, the underwater theme makes it fit right in with the recently revealed DLC, Sea of Sorrow. Since we know that Silksong was going to have at least one water-themed area at some point, it’s possible that Team Cherry is revisiting the idea in the DLC.

As of the time of writing, we simply don’t know enough about Sea of Sorrow to be sure whether it’s linked to the expansion or not, even if the submarine does fit the bill nicely. Whatever the case, it’s still a very cool discovery that gives some interesting and all-too-rare insight into Silksong’s development.
It has been 12 months of unexpected hits, leading to a fairly expected conclusion. Roll on 2026!
