Rhiannon (she/her) is the Deputy News Lead and Chief Reporter at TheGamer. You may have heard her on the BBC or read her words at TechRadar Gaming and TechRaptor. She won MCV’s Journalism Impact for Women in Games in 2025.
At TheGamer, you will often find her chatting to game developers, writers, and actors about their crafts. This includes a deep dive into Cyberpunk 2077’s narrative, and a series on the making of the Fable trilogy.
She also follows industrial action and existential threats to its workers, particularly the use of generative AI. As part of this, she’s explored how AI Darth Vader sets a dangerous precedent, and was one of the first reporters to look into generative AI dating companions.

When we think of the Larian formula, we think of going out on an adventure with a party and taking down our foes in turn-based combat. However, this was only locked in with Divinity: Original Sin, so when a new Divinity game was announced at The Game Awards, it was unclear how it would play.

Now, Larian head Swen Vincke has confirmed that, once again, Divinity will be turn-based. Better yet, it will also boast the co-op multiplayer from its last three games, letting us partner up with friends on a journey that should feel right at home for anyone who liked Baldur’s Gate 3.

Divinity Will Play Like Baldur s Gate 3
Divinity won t fix what isn t broken

In an interview that will go out later today, Vincke cleared up the confusion surrounding Divinity’s gameplay.

“Originally, the criticism of BG3 was that it was Divinity: Original Sin 3. So there was a lot of DNA from Original Sin that was brought into BG3,” Vincke says. “If you like BG3, you’re going to like this one. It’s a turn-based RPG, it’s got co-op multiplayer.”

Some fans had assumed that, since this game is dropping the “Original Sin” subheading, Divinity would play like one of the previous games. Then, a job listing called that into question, and it’s now been confirmed that Larian will stick with the system it’s been working with for years.

With that said, Divinity will probably be less Baldur’s Gate 3 and more Original Sin. That is because Divinity will not follow Dungeons Dragons rules, and it will instead be up to Larian to decide how the turn-based combat will work. In Original Sin 2, you had action points, and moving around and using abilities would cost a certain number of points. It seems likely that we’ll return to this.

Whatever the case may be, we’re probably a good while away from seeing any gameplay. The cinematic trailer at The Game Awards gave us a good idea of the tone Larian is going for, but since the ongoing development of Baldur’s Gate 3 only just ceased, it’s unlikely that there’s much gameplay to show off at this stage. Although judging by the epilogue to Baldur’s Gate 3, this game has been on Larian’s mind for some time, so who knows?
