One obstacle you’ll come across in your journey are locked treasure chests. These will pose a challenge to the inexperienced, but there are multiple ways to get the contents inside. Precious loot can make all the difference when exploring the jianghu, and it may just save your life.
Where To Find Locked Chests
When you progress through the story enough to reach Kaifeng, you’ll find a whole new world waiting for you. Here, there are countless treasures to find, and many of them will be behind a locked chest.
Become a cat whisperer in Where Winds Meet. Locate and befriend 21 hidden kittens in the Qinghe area.
Search along the riverbanks for misers carefully guarding their treasures, or instead search the less-traveled roads for merchants down on their luck. Either way, you’ll know you’ve found a locked chest when it glows gold and won’t let you open it without the lockpicking minigame.
How To Lockpick Chests
Make sure that you’re not seen when lockpicking a chest. At best, the NPCs guarding it will tell you to go away. At worst, you may be in for a fight. Once you’re in position and successfully interact with the lock, it’s time to crack it open.
The lockpicking minigame is a puzzle, and the difficulty scales with you. You’ll need to align all the pieces of the lock tumblers to make a picture, but when all the pieces look like they can go together, how can you tell which one is right?
Listen for a soft click sound, which will tell you that you’re on the right track. Line up all the pictures to unlock the chest and collect your rewards. Just be ready to run if the owner catches you!
You can also kill the NPCs around the chest if you have trouble sneaking past them, but beware of the consequences! Bounties are no joke.

If you’re having trouble finding the right puzzle solution, look around for signposts that other players have left behind! They may have revealed a clue or the puzzle solution for you.
How To Open Guarded Chests Without Lockpicking
If a locked chest is heavily guarded or in a dangerous area, you can avoid the lockpicking mechanism altogether by using Celestial Seize on it. This will retrieve the items for you from within the chest at a distance, baffling whoever was guarding the items.

You can learn this martial art in Qinghe, at Heaven’s Pier by completing the Foul Play quest. In this, you’ll have to steal a vial hidden on some crates during a drinking competition, at which point you’ll unlock the martial art and can do with it what you please.
Not all locked chests can be opened this way. Some will require you to play the minigame, which will be noted by a zero percent chance when using Celestial Seize.
