As If Breath Of The Wild Wasn’t Immersive Enough, You’ll Soon Be Able To Play It In VR

A truly talented modder has done the unthinkable and added full VR functionality to the already immersive The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
As the whole gaming industry has made very clear in the eight years since it originally released, Breath of the Wild was a landmark moment for open-world games that everyone’s been trying to replicate. One of the big things that made Link’s genre-pushing adventure such a surprise is how it added so much immersion, exploration, and depth to the known Zelda formula.
Like me, you might think that Breath of the Wild is already about as immersive as it gets, and that there’s no possible way it could go any further. Well, get ready to eat those words, as a skilled modder has spent the past five years working on making the game playable in VR, and it looks truly amazing.
Breath Of The Wild Is About To Be Fully Playable In VR
I Just Pray Nintendo Lets It Live
Over on YouTube, Flat2VR shared a trailer for the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild VR mod, an “impossible” task which has been being worked on by creator Crementif for more than five years. The mod is being released on December 30, and will be both open-source and freely available to anyone who can get it working.
Bidding farewell to Zelda’s Breath of the Wild era has proven incredibly bittersweet.
According to the trailer’s description, you’ll need Cemu to emulate the Wii U version of Breath of the Wild on PC, and will require a legal copy of the game to get working. Hopefully that and the fact that it’s free will keep Nintendo at bay.
As you can see for yourself from the trailer, the mod is truly impressive and lets you play through what appears to be all of Breath of the Wild in first-person VR. That includes being able to wield weapons, chop down trees, go hanggliding, start a fire, and even go horseback riding. Basically, everything you can do in BOTW, but now in first-person with full hand movement, motion controls, and gestures.
5 years ago during Covid-19 I started this project because I really wanted to chop down trees in VR. And from there it just grew way bigger and way better then I thought was feasible… – Crementif
Although what’s been shown of the mod so far is already a bit mindblowing, Crementif warns that it’s still a work in progress and to “expect some jank” when it releases in a few days (which you can see a little in the trailer’s intro). Even with all the jank, it’s an easy contender for one of the most impressive VR mods out there, and one you can expect to see making waves on December 30.
An RPG from 2011 shouldn’t run at 30 frames per second on a console from 2025.
