Genshin Impact developer MiHoYo and animation studio Ufotable announced a Genshin Impact anime adaptation in 2022, causing a ripple of excitement in the Genshin community. However, progress updates have been nonexistent since the announcement, causing fans to worry that the project had been quietly cancelled.
This seemed especially likely when Ufotable announced in July that the workload of producing Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle had become so great that staff were being taken off other projects and diverted to Demon Slayer.
However, these concerns were put to rest at Genshin FES 2026, as MiHoYo provided an update on the anime. According to Genshin’s combat designer Aquaria, the adaptation is progressing at a steady pace, and no unforeseen issues have arisen during production.
The announcement video did explicitly state that the adaptation was a “long-term project,” which means Ufotable is likely still on schedule with the project. The video didn’t give much away about the narrative of the anime, instead focusing mostly on landscapes and a couple of characters.
MiHoYo Promises To Work Harder
Aquaria also apologised for what he perceives to be a low cadence of updates for Genshin in recent months, explaining that everyone on the team is operating in a “four-dimensional” manner and is working on multiple things at once (thanks, Rachii_Chan).
“Speaking of which, I would like to apologise to everyone,” Aquaria declared. “Why? Because some of you guys have probably seen feedback like, ‘Hey, Genshin! What the hell are you up to?’ A lot of improvements, including some better design improvements, only came in later versions. Why didn’t we release them sooner? You might think the development team isn’t pushing themselves to the extreme, and that a lot of our voices haven’t been very responsive.”
A lot of the complaints you see from the community on social media concern game balance, especially the balance of older characters. In a game as expansive and as regularly updated as Genshin Impact, sometimes older characters can become ‘irrelevant’ in the metagame.

“Well, after all, everyone is working in this four-dimensional way. Where it feels like ‘I’ll do yours, finish yours, then do yours, finish yours, do yours’ that kind of feeling,” Aquaria continued. “It’s true we’re sometimes not sensitive when it comes to time. For this, I would like to say sorry, sorry. But rest assured! I’ll definitely go back and immediately push our team working in this four-dimensional space.”
Genshin Impact version 6.3 is expected to begin on January 14.
